How to Save Your Neighborhood

A few weeks ago, we re-launched our campaign to promote and preserve mid-century residential architecture through our Save Your Neighborhood Campaign. Y'all know we aren't purists per se, but we do wish to raise awareness of MCM design and hope that, in so doing, we will see more of it protected and, ideally, restored or reinvented.

Las Vegas real estate agent Jack LeVine, a.k.a. "Uncle Jack," is doing his part to preserve some very vintage Vegas buildings. Today he posted about the Nevada Savings And Loan Headquarters designed by Walter Zick and Harris Sharp.

Uncle Jack's comprehensive website on Vegas architecture and design has been very helpful to us as we continue our own research. By cultivating an appreciation for both commercial and residential structures, his website has played an important part in the historic preservation of mid-century Vegas architecture.

Jack has asked readers to continue to help him identify other Zick and Sharp buildings:

"Can any of you help us figure out the other branches that are mentioned? We only have a drawing of the headquarters building in the slide presentation."

Like he says, "The more we learn about the designs, the architects and the history of those who built and used the historic homes and offices and hotels, the better we'll be able to keep them around in the future."

Check out some of our other favorite Uncle Jack posts:

And once you are done with all of that, come on back and take the pledge to Save Your Neighborhood. You don't have to live in a time capsule, just commit to preserving or replacing at least one unique, period-appropriate feature of your home or neighborhood. Each element was intentional, from the light fixtures and built-in intercom system to the stair railings and concrete screen block. It was all a part of the mid-century aesthetic which has since become symbolic of the idealism of that era. Preserving that style is about more than showing off a numbered and dated Eames lounger; it is about restoring the charm of the American mid-century. Please encourage your friends and neighbors to do the same.

After you take the pledge, you can put one of these badges on your blog or in your email sig line. Thanks for your support!
